Dedicated to flakedice, because in the end -however unwittingly- xe sparked it with the tree sprite story.
Title: Something that you see
Pairing: Redundant. 104.
Universe: AU (Courtlife, as I refer to it)
A/N: Set before that first installment which was oh-so-long ago. Kind of just setting things up.
The dawn touched her fingers lightly upon the bleak vision the night had left behind, finger-painting it in all the rosy and golden hues of the morning. The sun was an angry orange through the thin clouds, laboring to rise over the horizon to start another day. Doumeki turned his head away from the sight, lips pursed thoughtfully.
The sight of his husband, still snuggled up in bed under covers half turned away, assaulted him and he momentarily stopped in the doorway to take in the cold room, the sunrays slowly creeping in through a slanted window, the leather wallpaper in gold with cream-coloured flowers embossed on it. And Watanuki, all tousled hair and sprawling limbs, awkward beauty folded in on himself as he muttered something in his sleep and then shifted restlessly.
The movement called him back to himself and Doumeki slipped away, not wanting to be caught in that room he didn’t have ready access to.
After consuming a hasty breakfast mostly consisting of piping hot tea (a pot of keemun, his own favourite choice, a mellow, somewhat sweet little number with a subtle, barely-there undertone of smoke) and two well-buttered halves of a scone, Doumeki was fully prepared to flout the rules –as usual- and went out. After so long a period of disuse, his stiff riding boots seemed heavier than usual on his feet as he impatiently strode down the many stairs and to the stables.
Swinging himself up on his horse (the stableboys stared curiously, but wisely decided not to inquire if he had milord’s permission) he breathed in deeply of the crisp morning air and then spurred the horse into action. The lands (formerly Doumeki’s, then the crown’s and now Watanuki’s) were vast and he veered off to the right after a while of riding haplessly over fields, going through the forest on a round that would take him a few hours. Anything, anything that got him out of Watanuki’s presence even if it meant braving the storm later on.
Doumeki was not very good at being hemmed in. You’d think he would be, given the family circumstances, but he simply wasn’t. He chafed under the inactivity forced upon him, the regulations. He resented it under the sheen of silence. Now, though, he shrugged all of those thoughts off and just enjoyed the speed, the chase, the air and the wind.
When he returned, he expected to be met by a hail of abuse and had already calculated what parts of the mansion Watanuki was likely to be in over the next hours. But as he tried to enter the study (he wasn’t one to postpone a confrontation) he was turned away impatiently by a page who pompously informed him that the master wasn’t available to see him just now.
So in the end Doumeki had to slink away and think of some other employment for the afternoon rather than Watanuki-baiting.
Watanuki, meanwhile, was having a somewhat worse than usual day. He’d slept well enough and foregone breakfast in favour of making a dint on the paperwork that was again beginning to pile up on his desk. From there he ran the estates, orders and information flowing to and from in an endless stream of words and he sat at the centre, a spider with all the threads of the web in his hands. So what that stubborn and wilful man that he’d been saddled with was up to wasn’t really any of Watanuki’s top concerns as long as he kept out of the way.
Lunch time came and went, as did afternoon tea and dinner and at last, just as the sun was setting and the candles were being lit before the servants finally sat down for their own meals, the lord of the mansion called it quits and emerged from his seclusion. Only to find that, outside of his study’s door, a small, grey figure about the height of Watanuki’s index finger stood waiting. He stopped, barely in time, and just about avoided stepping on the small creature that didn’t move. In the unwavering shadows that were beginning to settle themselves in the hallway it should by rights have been near invisible. But Watanuki, with that strange sight superimposed upon his normal one, could see him clearly. So he kneeled down on the carpet and lowered his voice so as to not startle the little man – after all, as he knew by experience, when speaking to one of the little people, it was best to be considerate.
The conversation was lengthy and afterwards, the wight disappeared within the wink of an eye as his people was wont to do. Watanuki remained thoughtfully on his knees, considering what it said about the times that the small guardian spirits of this home had chosen to reveal themselves to him. For despite their size, the gardvord were immensely powerful and they went under many names. They could do a man a good turn or a very bad one, they could devote themselves to mischief-making or labour hard all their lives to help a human prosper.
They had been guarding the Doumekis for centuries – and now they were worried. They had heard things, seen, felt – just as rats they lived close to the earth and in the dark nooks and corners and when bad things were afoot, they knew. They read the signs.
Watanuki spent the rest of the evening immersed in the library, reading every book he could find on the tomte, the domovoi, the vetter, the brownie – all different names for the creature he had received earlier.
Doumeki spent the rest of the evening immersed in considering a problem, turning it over and over, poking and prodding it from all directions. For earlier, standing in the shadows, he had seen his husband speak to thin air as if there was something else there, something that only he could see. That narrowed the possibilities down to three things; his husband liked to indulge in fantasy games, which was unlikely the way Doumeki saw it although he didn’t know Watanuki intimately enough to fully disregard the idea. His husband was mad which, he supposed, was fully possible and probably the solution that most other people would have pinned down as most plausible. Or there was actually something there, something that was hidden from the eyes of others but visible as if in plain daylight to Watanuki.
For the first time in his life, Doumeki felt the stirrings of being intrigued by an entity beyond himself, and he vowed to get to the bottom of this.

Comments
I can't remember the first installment, though. *going off to search*
And could you add a link to the other piece you already had...because I can't recall reading it..thoughi've read others where Watanuki is royalty or in a higher position of authority in an estate..I can't place if this and what i read are linked.
*cough*
Dawn
-Oh a lovely personification there! And then having the sun itself as grudging. Beauty full of trials - a nice reflection of the situation?
his husband
-I spazz with joy whenever I read this XD
And Watanuki, all tousled hair and sprawling limbs, awkward beauty folded in on himself as he muttered something in his sleep and then shifted restlessly.
-I love this description! 'Awkward beauty' - you've pretty much compressed his personality into those two words. And the restless sleeping - ah, I sense troubles.
caught in that room he didn’t have ready access to.
-hehehe. Not meant to there, eh? Does Watanuki lock him out? XD
a pot of keemun, his own favourite choice, a mellow, somewhat sweet little number with a subtle, barely-there undertone of smoke
-Sounds nice. I am assume this is an actual tea? I'm afraid I haven't heard about it before. But I'm going to have to try it now :D And Doumeki doesn't seem to be eating much there - but maybe he doesn't like breakfast?
formerly Doumeki’s, then the crown’s and now Watanuki’s
-Ooh! You're setting up an interesting picture here. So Doumeki's family got in a bit of trouble. Having their lands confiscated (?) and given to Watanuki who he's now married to. That must be galling. Question. Does this mean that Watanuki didn't have any lands formerly (i.e. he became Duke recently?) or that the land is an important keystone of the country and thus given over to him (as in the gift of a new political power?). Or (sorry, I'm in speculation mode now XD) was the land changing hands along the lines of Doumeki being the heir, the crown taking guardianship and then Watanuki receiving it through marriage? That would explain why they are both refered to as Dukes later (I think I'm remembering that correctly). But if Doumeki was a Duke that would indicate that he's rather closely linked to the royal family and thus Yuuko. Hmmm. Intriguing.
He chafed under the inactivity forced upon him, the regulations. He resented it under the sheen of silence.
-I like this. I totally agree with you here. Doumeki's not made for that sort of thing XD
When he returned, he expected to be met by a hail of abuse
-It sounds like Doumeki isn't given much in the way of free reign here. I suppose Watanuki's got his reasons for it. But I do wonder what they are.
From there he ran the estates, orders and information flowing to and from in an endless stream of words and he sat at the centre, a spider with all the threads of the web in his hands.
-This description is so fitting. Watanuki's always busy and it makes sense that he would throw himself into the duties of running the estate.
So what that stubborn and wilful man that he’d been saddled with was up to wasn’t really any of Watanuki’s top concerns as long as he kept out of the way.
-I'm getting the idea that running the estate is Watanuki's main priority. The keystone idea is looking more promising. 'Saddled' makes it clear that the marriage was not Watanuki's idea either (yeah, it was Yuuko's I know but he's gone along with it - for the sake of duty?). It will be interesting to see how his view of Doumeki changes. Though now that I remember his reaction to Doumeki's duelling I'm EXTREMELY interested in Watanuki's background. I'd love to receive some hints of where he was before the marriage XD
that strange sight superimposed upon his normal one
-Watanuki just isn't Watanuki if he can't see things that are invisible to other people. I wonder if Doumeki knows about it? And little people - oh this is getting more and more interesting!
1 of 2 (can't be helped XD)
Kind of, yes. And I like the dawn. XD
You'll be spazzing a lot from now on, then. ;P
Isn't he just, though? He's an awkward beauty. :D A grouchy, pretty little thing.
are your doumeki senses tingling yet? ;)Not meant to be there, no. Well... time will tell. ;)
it's the only way for Watanuki to control Doumeki's raging lusts ;)It is an actual tea, yes. I'm something of an amateur tea connosseiour (except I can't spell that and I don't know nearly enough about tea to lay claim to that title). I love tea, anyway, and I love trying different sorts. Do try it, it's lovely. :D We'll be seeing more tea in most of my universes, I'm afraid. >_<
Admittedly he didn't eat a lot, no, but he's not always big on breakfast, this one.
They did indeed get themselves into more than a fair bit of trouble. I imagine it is rather galling, yes. Far as the question goes, I'll try to answer to the best of my abilities. :D Watanuki didn't have lands before he married Doumeki when they were bestowed upon him as a wedding present. So basically he's a landless upstart.
because something happened that caused the Watanuki estate to be... inaccessibleSo in fortune, rank and social standing Watanuki is really Doumeki's inferior, a fact that will play an important part later on.No, I've always seen him as a very active person.
He isn't indeed, and Wata's got his reasons. But that's for later. ;)
He is a very serious and dedicated young man, that boy. He takes his responsibilities seriously. :)
At this time, it is. Of course it wasn't his idea, when has Watanuki ever willingly done something that will -in the long run- make him happy? *cheerful* Just as in the manga, it will need to undergo a radical change.
He isn't. It's so much a part of who Watanuki is that he just wouldn't be the same without. Not to say that it can't be done though! :)
I don't mind XD
It shows :D
Certainly XD
Just the sort of combination to grab Doumeki's interest XD Of course. Doumeki=trouble for Watanuki :D
LOL. I love the image of Doumeki sneaking in just to stare at him. He's such a stalker. And might we have that later? XD
Ah! I am a tea person also! I will do so. And there is nothing wrong with tea showing up :D
Oooh! That sounds promising! LOL. Landless upstart XD And inaccessible you say. I will wager that its a supernatural problem? Ah. Could that inferiority be a problem in court leading to those duels? Doumeki's got his work cut out for him. And I supose it doesn't help with Doumeki's resentment.
The vast appetite sort of gives that indication XD
Later is good. It means there is more XD
*sigh* Watanuki always does.
Aha! Maybe Doumeki will become that later :D Never? LOL. No doubt through a suitable whack-over-the-head equivalent.
True XD
-Oh this is wonderful! Just the images here 'as rats', 'close to the earth', 'dark nooks and corners' - I love the feel of it. And the implication that things are going wrong - LOL I love that even more. I'm getting the idea of the whole country about to face unheaval and the duels resulting from that somehow. Though with the movement of lands from Doumeki to Watanuki - there seems to be something wrong already. *rubbing hands* Good times ahead :D
Watanuki spent the rest of the evening immersed in the library, reading every book he could find on the tomte, the domovoi, the vetter, the brownie – all different names for the creature he had received earlier.
-Ah, the different names give this AU a west and eastern european feel. You've clearly done some research here (and if there are household beings that potentially opens the way for the existence of all the others - supernatural creatures of barns, gardens, fields, forests etc. Oh! This is wonderful!). And Watanuki's research. You've given a picture of him as dedicated and clearly very capable man. I love where this is going. Or where I think it's going XD
Three possibilities
-Excellent! Doumeki saw it! (Though that does seem to suggest that Douemki spies on Watanuki a lot. *smirk* I wonder why that is...XD) Fantasy games - LOL! Though I suppose it isn't too out there with the way some nobility act XD Mad - I think you know I already like this. Perceived madness is always so much fun - especially if the rest of society get wind of it (ooh! A possibility later?). And I love the last. Most people wouldn't consider it but Doumeki, of course, does.
For the first time in his life, Doumeki felt the stirrings of being intrigued by an entity beyond himself, and he vowed to get to the bottom of this.
-A bit self-absorbed in the past, was he? Intriguing. I really want to know about his circumstances pre-marriage. And yay! for ending on this note! Steely Doumeki determination is a always a good ending point. And it makes me think of all the ways he's going to go about finding the truth. More stalking is high on my mind.
One last point. If the little people have been serving the Doumeki family for so long it suggests that either some of his ancestors could see and talk to them (Haruka? XD) or there were the usual offerings being made to keep them there? Will we find out which, later? And they seem to have taken to Watanuki pretty well. Because he is now married to Doumeki and thus part of the Doumeki line now? Or because they see him as a reliable/trustworthy person?
Thank you so much for taking these two up again! I now owe you some 53rd Regiment. *shifty eyes* And I am prepared to offer more bribes for later installments. But no rush - take your time :D
see you
Nice writing style, different to flakedice's obviously, but still good. :)
I definitely get the impression that Doumeki has been 'cabinned, cribbed and confined' for most of his life and had a brief taste of something like freedom before he was married off.
I'd quite like to see some kind old matron start paying him visits and offering him good but discrete advice, maybe the mother and twins from the anime (can't remember if they're in the manga ?_?)? Also perhaps Watanuki gets his own advice from the Lady in the park before Doumeki well and truly shows her off, perhaps she has some secret linked to his family's downfall and he reveals it to get her away from his husband and to prevent further scandal surrounding their names?
Feel free to use/ignore all comments and suggestions, and if you need ideas I've got dozens.
Thanks for posting, Ronnie. :)
Lovely writing, a lot of details pressed into it, very yummy.
It did have a Victorian English feel, which I adore as an Austin fanatic, but with a darker and more seductive tone.
